Episode description ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sue officially joins the team and Jack is appointed as her training agent. Jack and Sue investigate a bomb threat at an oil company, and on a drive-by she does alone, Sue manages to find incriminating evidence, and gets the offenders locked up. Not realising that she didn't follow protocol, the FBI realise they have to let the offenders go free due to an illegal search, and the case is almost lost. Meanwhile, Lucy wants to room with Sue, and they go on a hunt for an apartment together. Sue tries to figure out how she is going to tell Lucy that she is not keen on having a roommate. Transcript ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ Sue's apartment - night ] Sue pushes the front door open with her bottom, coming in backwards and picking up a suitcase from outside. Jack, Lucy and Charlie are waiting inside the apartment for her to arrive and all jump up together when they see the door open. Jack, Lucy & Charlie: Surprise! Sue turns to Levi, who is acting up at the company, not realising they are there. Sue: Levi, take it easy, I'm happy to be home too. Jack and Lucy exchange glances in amusement. Sue turns to face them. Jack, Lucy & Charlie: Surprise! Sue: Oh! My gosh! You scared me. Er… what are you doing here? Jack: We came by to say congrats. Charlie: We heard you made it through Quantico with flying colours. Sue: (To Jack & Lucy) With you two working for the FBI, I would have thought your information would be more accurate. Jack: So the colours weren't flying. Lucy: But you made it. That's what counts. Sue: It's not really a place set up for a deaf person. Levi did pretty well though. Levi barks. Charlie: I'm still happy to know you. Special investigative assistant, Sue Thomas. And welcome home. Jack: It's good to have you back. Sue: Thanks. It's good to be back. A moment later. Lucy is cutting a piece from a cake which reads, "Welcome home Sue". Lucy: Did you know Jack's available again? He and the, er, the attorney, Rhonda Venito… they broke up, so, did I tell you or did I tell you? She was not the real deal. Sue looks over to where Jack and Charlie are talking. Sue: It's against FBI policy to date someone within your own unit. And since Jack isn't going anywhere, and I just got here… It doesn't really matter. [ The bullpen - day ] Sue enters along with the team's supervisor, Stan Eldridge. Stan Eldridge: Attention please! As most of you know, it's official. Miss Thomas will be joining your unit. I have to be honest, initially I wasn't in favour of this little experiment. But it seems to have worked out. Bobby: Woohoo! The team clap. Sue laughs. Jack: Good job. Stan Eldridge: And since Jack got you into this mess, he'll be your training agent. I like Jack, try not to get him killed. Having said that, er, welcome to the team. Sue and Stan Eldridge shake hands. Bobby: Who's gonna be Levi's training agent? Levi barks. Bobby: Myles? You hear, Myles? Myles does not look very amused. The rest of the team laugh. [ Opening theme plays ] [ FBI building - day ] Sue, Lucy & Levi are walking down a corridor towards the bullpen. Lucy: So I'm lying in my bed last night and I'm wondering why I have this horrible headache, and suddenly it hits me - the bowling pins! Sue: Excuse me? Lucy: The pounding in my head… had the same rhythm as the incessant crashing of balls knocking down pins in the bowling alley below your apartment. Sue: Erm, my apartment gives you a headache? Lucy: Exactly! Now, the fact that you and I are friends and I can't stand to be in your apartment… that's a problem, but not an unsolvable one. Sue: Ok… Lucy: You need to move. Sue: I can't afford to move! DC is an expensive place! The bowling alley noise is what makes my apartment affordable - it's a vicious cycle. Lucy: You can afford to move if you only have to pay for half of the new apartment. It makes total sense. I am tired of my place, you're looking for a new one... If we were to move in together, we could get a much nicer place than either of us could afford on our own. Sue: Well, I've actually never had a roommate… but, I, I guess I could think about it. Lucy: (Starting to sound increasingly excited) Well, what's there to think about? I mean, we obviously get along great, and think about the car pooling possibilities! Sue: But I've got Levi. He is a handful. Lucy: You know how much I love him, he'll be fine… as long as he stays off my couch. Can't have dog hair on my couch. Lucy walks off into the bullpen. Sue lingers for a moment looking a little worried, and then proceeds to walk with Levi into the bullpen. Looking, she sees there is a little desk set up near Jack's. Jack looks towards Bobby and Bobby laughs. Sue: (Motioning towards the desk) Look at that, Levi! I must have been moved to my own office. But now, you've got your own desk! Check it out boy, and see how you like it. Levi runs over to the desk and puts his front paws up on top of it. Sue: How did you know he wanted a desk? On the way to work… that's all he talked about. He's going to need… a computer though. Tara: He's probably more computer savvy than… some of the people around here. Tara looks over at Myles. Jack: First lesson: Never let them get to you. Sue: Glad you approved. Wouldn't want to disappoint my "training agent". Bobby: Yeah, by the way, um, sorry you got stuck with him. Kind of wondered why they did that to ya… did ya do something unpleasant to Eldridge? Jack: Maybe he just wanted to make sure that she learn to work within the rules. Bobby: Look mate, I can't help it if I'm innovative. Jack: Innovative? Is that what you call it now… Crash? Sue: (To Bobby, pointing to Jack) Did he just call you "Crash"? Tara: Nobody told you? That's his nickname. Jack: Earned every letter of it. Sue: How? Bobby: Oh, we don't really need to get into specifics here. Jack: (Holding his hand up) It so happens that I am her training agent, and I think this would be an educational moment for her. He was a brand new agent, fresh from Quantico, and he had just been given his first government issue car. Bobby: It was a nice car too. Jack: And within 45 minutes, he totalled it. Still a bureau record, I believe? Bobby: I don't like to do anything half way. And thank you for sharing that story yet again… Sparky. Sue: Sparky? Jack: (Taking up his coat) That's a story for another time. Right now, we have to go. Bobby: You can run, Spark, but you can't hide. Sue, Jack and Levi leave the bullpen. Myles: (Referring to Sue) I can't wait until she falls on her face and they throw her out. This whole thing is nothing short of a travesty. [ Corridor in the FBI building ] Sue: Mind telling me where we're going? Jack: To talk to an empty suit. Sue: Sorry? Thought I saw you say, "talk to an empty suit". Jack: That's what I said. Ted Daltry used to work for the FBI… the kind we call an empty suit. Sue: I'm guessing that's not a term he would dare admit? Jack: No. It means a guy who looks good, says all the right things, but doesn't even come close to carrying his own weight. Not somebody who can be counted on. Sue: All style and no substance. Jack: Exactly. Every big organisation has them. He used to be one of ours. He left the bureau about a year ago to be head of Kaitlyn Oil's security team. Sue: Sounds like a pretty good job. Jack: Oh, very good. His resume's not empty, just his suit. Sue: So… what we going to see him about? Jack: He called a little while ago to report a bomb threat. Frankly, I've got my doubts about it being anything real, but we should still check it out. Makes a perfect starter case for you. Sue: Why do you say it's not real? Jack: Daltry's been with Kaitlyn Oil not quite a year now, and I happen to know that his contract's up for renewal, and he wants to stay. So, this is a perfect opportunity for him to show off his connections, how valuable he is. I wouldn't put it past him to make up this whole bomb threat scare to make sure that he gets rehired. Sue: You really think he would do that? Jack: Yup. I know him. Jack, Sue and Levi enter the elevator and Jack presses the button to close the doors. [ Daltry's office ] Daltry: Things must be pretty tough at the bureau, Hudson, if they've got you working with women and dogs. Jack: Let's cut to the chase, Daltry, you reported an anonymous phone call from someone threatening to blow up your refinery. Daltry sits down behind his desk. Jack and Sue sit down in chairs on the other side from him. Daltry: It was anonymous, but I think I know who made it. Jack: Really? Daltry: A disgruntled ex-employee by the name of Jerry White. Jack: What makes you so sure it was him? Daltry: Well, there are hot-heads, and then there are hot-heads. White is the industrial strength variety. It got so bad that I finally had to personally escort him off the premises. He didn't appreciate that. He made a real point of swearing that he'd get even. Sue: Anybody witness that? Daltry: No. He's a hot-head, but he's not stupid. Jack: I hear you're in the process of negotiating an extension for your services with Kaitlyn Oil. Daltry: What if I am? What has that got to do with anything? Sue: We have to ask if the alleged threat is in any way related to that. Daltry: Alleged threat. (Looking to Jack) That's good. You teach her that? Jack: Oh no, she learnt that all by herself. The FBI is making an effort to hire a better grade of employee than when you were there. Daltry: I'm guessing they still don't pay you any better though. I'll be embarrassed to tell you what they pay me here, Jack. You should wake up, cash in. Jack: It's been nice talking to you, Ted. I think we have everything we need for now. (Looking to Sue) Let's go. Jack and Sue stand. Daltry: Hey, Hudson. Whatever you think about me… the threat is real. This guy's a nutcase. [ On the street ] Sue: Do you still think Daltry's making it up? Jack: No. Call Tara and see if she can find anything on this guy. Sue: Jerry White. Jack: Yeah. [ Outside Jerry White's home ] Jack, Sue and Levi stand outside of Jerry White's home. Sue rings the doorbell. Jack: I'm here if you need me. Jerry White answers the door. Sue: Jerry White? Jerry White: Yeah. Who are you? Sue: FBI. We'd like to ask you a few questions. Jack shows Jerry White his ID card and badge. [ Inside Jerry White's home ] Jerry White is seated in an armchair, facing Jack and Sue who are sitting on a sofa. Jerry White: I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't threaten nobody. Sue: We have a witness who says you did. Jerry White: You mean Ted Barney Daltry? Sue: You didn't threaten him? Jerry White: I'm guessing everybody who's ever known Daltry has threatened him at one time or another. He just kinda brings that out in people. Sue: But it isn't the first time you've had problems at work, is it? Sue pulls out her notebook from her jacket pocket. Sue: At Dicon Refining, you were cited twice for having a disruptive attitude. And you were let go at Northward Oil for being a negative influence. I could go on. Jerry White: Sometimes stuff happens, ok? I don't care what anyone says, I ain't done nothing wrong. Now, I got things to do. Jack: (Proceeding to stand) You're right. We've taken enough of your time. Uh, thanks very much for speaking with us. Oh, just one other thing, Mr White, uh, if you didn't make the threats, do you have any idea who did? Jerry White: I don't know and I don't care. It ain't my problem. I ain't interested in doing ya job for ya. You're the FBI, you figure it out. Jack: I'll take that as a "no". [ Street, outside Jerry White's house ] Jack, Sue and Levi are walking away from Jerry White's house. Jack: So, you think he might be our guy? Tell me why. Sue: He got pretty upset. We must have hit on something. (There is a short pause) You don't agree. Jack: My instincts tell me it's not him. Sue: Ok. Why not? Jack: Same reasons that you think it is him. He got too upset when we asked him if he knew who might have done it. He didn't wanna help us. He didn't have any ideas. (Jack & Sue arrive back at the car) You see, innocent people… they don't wanna help you solve your case. They just want you outta their lives. But guilty people… they're more than happy to offer up alternative theories, and lead ya down the wrong road, and take the heat off themselves. Jack and Sue open doors on opposite sides of the car. [ Bullpen ] Jack, Sue and Levi walk in. Jack looks shocked, and then smiles in amusement. Sue looks around to find a section of the bullpen has been taped off, and there is a sign saying "DANGER. Enter at your own risk". Sue: I hope no-one was hurt. Sue stoops down and faces Levi. She signs for him to go and get the helmet. Levi goes and takes up a helmet, which is on the floor below the sign, in his mouth, and brings it to Sue. She takes it from him. Sue: Good boy, Levi. Tara: Wait. Did you just sign for Levi to do that? Sue: Yeah. I'm teaching him. Tara: (She looks impressed) Sign language? Sue nods. Lucy: She's teaching both of us. Levi's currently in the class ahead of me, but I'm, uh, gonna catch up to him in summer school. Sue: (To Jack) So, what next? Jack: Well, why don't you come up with a couple of ideas, let me know when you're ready, and we'll see how you did? Myles: (To Sue) You know, if you're looking for something to do, you could get me a cup of coffee. Sue looks slightly upset. Lucy: (To Myles, sounding annoyed) I'll get your coffee. You don't mind a little spit in it do you? (To Sue) Come on, we're gonna go have lunch together. I got something to show ya. Sue: Ok. [ Street. Outside a shop window ] Lucy is looking in marvel at a painting displayed in the shop window. Sue and Levi are with her. Lucy: Isn't it fabulous? Sue doesn't look like she agrees. Sue: Uh… it's very colourful. Lucy: (Not looking away from the painting) I know, I just love it! I been wanting to buy this for two months, and when we get our new place, I'm going to. Wouldn't it be perfect as a centre piece in our living room? (Turning to look at Sue, who still doesn't look convinced) Oh, and I have some other good news. I saw an ad for an apartment that sounds absolutely perfect for us. I called, and we can see it tonight, right after work if you're available? This is very exciting, don't you think? Sue nods, but looks worried. Lucy: Come on, we gotta see this painting up close. Through the glass doesn't do it justice. Lucy walks off quickly to go into the shop. Sue looks down at Levi. Sue: How am I going to get out of this one? Sue lets out an exasperated sigh and follows Lucy to join her in the shop. [ Apartment building which Lucy is interested in ] Sue and Lucy are being shown around the apartment by the landlady. Landlady: I figure having the FBI living on the premises can't hurt. You can help me keep out the riff-raff. (She turns to Sue & Lucy, smiling innocently) Uh, not that we have any riff-raff. Lucy: It's perfect. Sue: (To the landlady) And you're ok with dogs? Landlady: Since yours is a… service dog… erm, it won't be a problem. Lucy: I'm sold. Where do we sign? Sue: (To Lucy) It's nice, but I think we should think about it… a little bit. Landlady: Well, I wouldn't think about it too long. Now, others have looked at it, and if you don't take it, somebody else will. Lucy and Sue proceed to leave the apartment. Lucy: Is there something we should talk about… you're not getting cold feet are you? Sue: Uh, no. I just think we shouldn't jump into anything. It's the first place we've seen. Lucy: No, I understand that, that makes perfect sense… if you're not from here. But I've lived here all my life, and I can tell you, we're never gonna find anything better than that at this price. So, I think we should take it. (There is a pause) Unless you don't wanna live with me? Sue: Oh, no… it, it's not that. Lucy: So you think we should take it? Sue looks worried, and looks down at Levi. Looking back up at Lucy, she forces a smile and nods. Sue: I guess… Lucy: Ok. A moment later. They knock on the landlady's door, and she answers. Lucy: We decided… we'll take it. Landlady: I'm sorry, it's gone. Lucy: (Looking at the landlady, and then Sue in disbelief) It's what?! We were just in here three minutes ago! Landlady: I just got a call. I told ya it would go fast. Lucy looks upset and turns to Sue. Sue simply shrugs. [ Sue's apartment - night ] Sue: (To Levi) You dodged a bullet, you know that? (Slight pause) I know… the bullet had my name on it too. (Slight pause) But I'm not the one who will be banned from the couch. I just have to tell her… I don't want a new apartment with her. We said we were going to be open, and honest, about everything. (Levi looks up at her) And I'm going to be… I just have to figure out when. [ Bullpen - day ] Sue walks into the bullpen and smiles to herself as she notices that she now has a desk. She walks over and turns on the desk lamp, and then turns it back off. She laughs softly to herself as she sits down in the chair. Jack looks over to Tara, and they exchange a knowing glance. Sue shifts herself to move the chair closer to the desk and nearly falls off when it doesn't move. Sue: Oh! Bobby laughs softly. Sue tries to shift the chair from its position, and we see that the legs are fastened to the floor. She looks down and smiles cunningly. Putting her hands underneath the desk, she pulls the desk forward and then tries to move various objects on her desk. They all will not move. Bobby and Tara both look amused. Sue then goes to pick up her phone receiver, and pulls up the whole unit. Sue: (To Jack) Does this ever end? Jack: I wouldn't worry about it, it's a good sign. The more they haze ya, the more they like ya. If it never stops, then you've got a problem. Tara smiles to herself in amusement. Sue: (To Jack) I was thinking of going for a ride. You wanna come? Jack: (Shrugging) Yeah, where we going? Sue: Check out the refinery, talk to… Jerry White's former co-workers. See if anybody sheds some light, one way or the other. Jack: What are we waiting for? Sue reaches down for her bag and stands. Lucy comes running to her. Lucy: (Looking pleased) Glad I caught you. Are you available tomorrow morning? Sue: Uh… I, I think so… why? Lucy: Mrs Peterson with the apartment just called. The other tenant's credit fell through… the apartment's available again. She wants to know if we can come over tomorrow morning and sign the lease, so I told her we could. I think this was meant to be. Lucy walks off quickly, grinning. [ Jerry White's former place of work ] Jack and Sue are being led down a corridor by a woman by the name of Rita. She points to an office door on her right. Rita: You can use this office right here. Jack: Thanks. Rita: You're welcome. You know, I thought about, er, getting into law enforcement at one time… Sue: Really? Why didn't you? Rita: Little matter of me having a wrap sheet. Just a few youthful indiscretions, but they didn't look on it too favourably. Go figure. (She laughs softly) So, how ya doing? Er, you need anything? Jack: Uh, there is one question I'd like to ask you… Rita: Anything. Jack: Do you remember a former employee by the name of Jerry White? Rita: Lying, cheating, two-timing little weasel. Other than that, I got no comment. [Screen whites out] Jack and Sue are talking to a different woman. Woman: Jerry White… he didn't like me. Sue: Do you know why? Woman: Mr Daltry sent me to tell him he wasn't following the security policy. Sue: Why did Mr Daltry send you? Woman: Mr Daltry doesn't like to get involved in unpleasant things. [Screen whites out] Jack and Sue are back with the first woman, Rita. Rita: We dated for a couple of months when he first started to work here. Let's just say I'm glad he's gone. [Screen whites out] Sue and Jack are talking to a man about Jerry White. Sue: Did he ever tell you where he was? Man: Uh, no. Sue: No? (She goes to write something in her notepad) [Screen whites out] Jack and Sue are again talking to the first woman, Rita. Rita: One thing I can tell you about the four dimension Mr White… he's all talk and no action. (Looking purposely at Jack) If ya know what I mean. [Screen whites out] Sue and Jack are talking to another man. Man 2: Jerry could definitely rub people the wrong way, but we never had a problem with each other. [Screen whites out] Jack and Sue are talking to the first woman, Rita. Rita: (Looking purposely at Jack) Anything else… anything else you need… you let me know. Rita leaves the office. Sue: (To Jack) Should I have been learning something from that? [Screen whites out] Sue and Jack are now talking to a man sitting behind a desk by the name of Henry Proctor. Henry Proctor: I'm not really up on the company gossip. Have you talked to Rita yet? Sue: Yes... Jack did mostly. Henry Proctor: If the people around here worried as much about their jobs as they do with their latest grist from the rumour mill, we'd all be better off. Sue: Seems like you disapprove. Henry Proctor: I just work here, I'm not the emperor. Sue: Mr Proctor, did you ever have much contact with Jerry White? Henry Proctor: I worked on one project that brought me in contact with him. Other than that, no. I'm a white collar engineer. I don't go into the refinery… he's a refinery guy. Sue: And what was your impression of him? Henry Proctor: To be honest… he's a little scary. (Jack & Sue exchange glances) Frankly, he's the kinda guy that could blow this place up. [Screen whites out] Jack and Sue are just leaving. They walk past Rita's desk, where she is sitting. Jack: Thank very much, Rita. It's been a pleasure. Rita: The pleasure was all mine. Sue: Rita, how long have you worked here? Rita: Er, going on five years. Sue: You must know Henry Proctor pretty well… Rita: Yeah… Sue: You like him? Rita: In what way do you mean "like"? Sue: Er, as a co-worker. A good guy to work with? Rita: Oh! I thought you were getting at something else. Yeah, he's fine, he keeps to himself. He's very intelligent. Just ask him. Sue: He's an engineer, right? Rita: Er, yeah, that's right. Sue: Does he ever have much call to go on the plant? Rita: No, I don't think so. Sue: Thanks. Rita: Uh, Jack? If the FBI ever relaxes their no criminal record clause for agents… you just let me know. Jack: (Winks) I'll do that. Outside the building, Jack and Sue are walking away. Jack: (Loudly because of the noise of the plant) So, what's your fascination with Henry Proctor? Sue: Nothing. Well, I don't know. When I shook his hand, I could smell something on it, like he's been working with some kind of chemicals or something. Jack: Well, he does work in a refinery. Sue: But he's white collar, and he made a point to us, he doesn't ever go into the refinery… almost too much of a point. Yet, he still smells the same as the guys who actually do. Jack: Well, I'm not sure it means anything for our case, but I'm impressed with your observation. Sue: Do you mind if I check him out? Jack: Hey, far be it from me to stand in the way of you learning the joys of investigative busy work. Knock yourself silly. [ Bullpen - evening ] Sue is alone in the bullpen doing some research into Henry Proctor. Suddenly, Tara comes in looking rather fancy. She heads to her desk. Sue: You look great. Tara: Thanks. (She starts tapping something on her computer keyboard) Date… of the blind variety. (She stops and looks up for a moment) I don't mean he's blind… I mean, I haven't ever met him. Sue nods to let her know that she knows. Tara goes back to tapping away on her keyboard. Tara: You ever been on a blind date? Sue: No. Tara: Smart girl. I don't know why I keep saying yes to these things. Sue: Maybe this… will be the one. Tara: (She leaves her computer) Or the last one. (She starts packing up her stuff) Stay tuned, details at eleven. Sue smiles and then looks down at the file on her desk. Tara: The refinery case? Sue: Yeah… something's not making sense to me. (Tara walks over to Sue's desk) There's this guy Jack and I talked to named Henry Proctor. (Tara sits down on Sue's desk) I smelled chemicals on him… now I find out that if his job involvement was going any slower, he'd be going down the ladder. He's been passed over for promotions a number of times, yet he told us how happy he was. Tara: Perhaps he's not the happy, loyal employee he tried to sell himself as. You told Jack? Sue: No, he was already gone when I got the call from Ted Daltry… you know, everyone's favourite former co-worker… Tara: Daltry was before I got here. (She looks up in thought) I'll probably meet him on a blind date sometime. Tara quickly gets up from Sue's desk and goes back to her own to get her bag. Sue: Have you seen Lucy? Tara: She left early. Sue: Ok, I'll call her. Tara: If you're looking for a dinner partner, you can always join me and Mr Who Knows. Sue: Thanks, but I think I'm going to go by Henry Proctor's… a drive-by… the friendly tool of the FBI. Nodding and picking up her bag, Tara turns and heads to leave the bullpen, her back to Sue. Tara: Uhh, a girl's gotta have fun. Sue doesn't see what Tara says, and Tara walks out of the bullpen. Sue: (To Levi) I really don't wanna do this over the phone. But it's time. Sue picks up the phone and dials Lucy's number. Sue waits with the receiver to her mouth. The little LCD read-out screen reads, "Hi, this is Lucy. Leave a message. I'll call you back. Bye." Sue: (Into the phone) Hi Luce, it's me. Give me a call… I'll be at the office for a little while, after that I'll make a quick stop, then I'll be at home. Bye. Sue puts down the phone, and then looks down at Levi who is still lying by her desk. Sue: There's no way I'm going to tell her voicemail. [ Outside Henry Proctor's house - night ] Sue and Levi are in Sue's car across the street from Henry Proctor's house. Sue is watching the house, and Levi is scavenging for food in a fast food packet. Sue: Sorry buddy, all the chicken is gone. Henry Proctor arrives in his car and parks up in the driveway in front of his garage. Sue: We have contact, Levi. Henry Proctor gets out of his car and opens up his garage door. Sue: How is your night vision? Henry Proctor gets his cell phone out, receiving a call. He starts wandering around outside his house, talking into the phone. Sue: You gonna tell me what he's saying? Come on, Levi… what do you say we get a closer look? Sue gets out of the car, Levi behind her on his leash. He starts to sniff around at a tree. Sue: Hey Levi, not now. We're on a case. She looks towards Henry Proctor's garage and can see containers there. They look like they might contain chemicals. Checking to see that Henry Proctor is far enough away, she crosses the street and heads for the garage. Going inside, she checks the labels on the containers, and then notices a small box on a shelf. She lifts a piece of cardboard from on top of it to reveal a small clock, wires and batteries. From outside the garage, Henry Proctor can be heard still talking into his phone. Henry Proctor: Yeah… yeah, I don't have a problem with that. Levi jumps up at Sue to warn her that Henry Proctor is near. Henry Proctor: (Into the phone) Ok… Sue pulls on Levi's leash to make him go with her and hides behind the containers. Henry Proctor enters the garage. He is still talking on the phone. Henry Proctor: Yeah… who?... (He leaves the garage again) Hold on… no… I don't wanna talk to him… my deal is with you… yeah, I'm going back in to get it right now. (He goes back into the garage, and then through into his house) Look, I already told you. I want this simple, and I want it to… Sue and Levi quickly leave the garage. Sue and Levi hide behind a bush just outside of the garage. Henry Proctor is wandering around outside again, still talking into his cell phone. Henry Proctor: Yep. (He reaches into his car for something) Yeah… (Sue can now read his lips) I already told you, Delaverson, I got no problem with that… yeah, he got me what I needed… I'll be there. Henry Proctor snaps his cell phone shut and puts it away in his pocket. He gets into his car, closing the garage door with a remote, backs down the driveway and then drives away. Sue breathes a sigh of relief. [ Bullpen - night ] Sue is alone in the bullpen, sitting at her desk. Jack enters. Sue: I hope I didn't wake you when I called… Jack: (Looking slightly annoyed) It's alright… I had to get up to answer the phone anyway. Jack takes off his coat and hangs it up on a stand near his desk. Jack: Why don't you… fill me in on the details? Sue gets up from her desk and dumps an evidence bag onto Jack's desk. Jack: Clothes? Sue: I found these in Proctor's trash after he left. Jack has picked up the bag and has opened it slightly. He holds the opening to his nose and sniffs at the contents inside. Jack: Ammonium nitrate? Sue: It's what I smelled on him at the refinery. I saw the containers in his garage. I also saw a box with a small clock, and batteries, and wires. Jack: Sounds like a triggering device. Sue: And blasting caps. Jack: Our buddy, Henry, is either up to no good or he's planning one heck of a fireworks display. Sue: So what do we do now? Jack: Put the coffee on. We need to prepare all this and get a warrant before he sees another day of work. [ The apartment Lucy is interested in - morning ] The landlady, Mrs Peterson, is standing in the apartment with a clipboard, writing something. She checks her watch. Lucy is standing a little distance from her, talking into her cell phone, looking worried. Lucy: (In a lowered tone) Sue, it's Lucy. Um, I'm here at the apartment, I'm waiting… where are you? Lucy turns to glance over at Mrs Peterson, and then turns her back to her again. Lucy: I never heard back from you last night and you're starting to worry me. Call if you get this. Lucy snaps her cell phone shut and then turns to look at Mrs Peterson again, putting on a fake grin. Lucy: I'm sure she'll be here any minute, but here's a thought. How about if I sign the lease now (Mrs Peterson walks over to her) and Sue signs it later. Mrs Peterson: I can't do that. Lucy: But she's very trustworthy. I'm sure something just came up at the last minute. Mrs Peterson: I'm sorry, but I have to have both parties sign the lease. Lucy: Ok. I'm sure she'll be here any minute. Mrs Peterson: (Not looking convinced) Hmmhmm. Mrs Peterson walks away and Lucy looks a mixture of worried and disappointed. [ Outside Henry Proctor's house ] The team arrive in their cars outside Henry Proctor's house. They are all dressed in the official FBI jackets, ready to make an arrest. Jack: Come on, move it, let's go. The team quickly position themselves around the house. Jack: Now. Jack signals. Jack: Hit the door. Demetrius: Clear, go! [ Bullpen ] Jack and Sue arrive back in the bullpen. The rest of the team see them arriving and applaud. Bobby: Woohoo! Spectacular job, Miss Thomas! Sue lowers herself into her chair behind her desk, smiling at him. Bobby: Because of you, Henry Proctor is in custody, and the world is a safer place. Or perhaps young Myles would even like to offer up an apology. Myles doesn't look amused and gets up from his desk. Myles: Even a deaf squirrel finds the occasional acorn. Jack looks slightly annoyed at Myles. Sue looks over at Jack and does an impression of a squirrel. Jack: (To Sue) Just for future reference, you did good. Sue: Thanks. Demetrius walks over to Sue's desk and puts keys on the desk in front of her. Sue: (To Demetrius) What's this? Demetrius: Keys to your new government issue wheels. Tara smiles to herself, looking amused. Demetrius: Try not to break any records. Sue grins, looking at Bobby. Sue: (To Demetrius) Thanks. Demetrius: It's on the second floor of the parking garage, second car to your left, the black Chevy. Sue smiles and stands, throwing the keys a little way into the air and catching them, leaving the bullpen with Levi. Jack throws a questioning, confused glance at Demetrius. Demetrius smiles cunningly. [ The parking garage ] Sue enters through the door onto the second floor of the parking garage with Levi. She looks around. [Back in the bullpen] Demetrius is standing next to Tara's desk, and they are both looking at her computer. Tara: Hasn't seen it yet. Bobby runs over and joins Tara and Demetrius in watching the computer screen. Demetrius: She's just about to. We see that they are watching Sue in the parking garage. Jack has now come over to see what's going on. Bobby, looking intently at the screen, laughs. [ Back in the parking garage ] Sue rounds a corner and then finds the black Chevy. It's old, rusty, windscreen and front doors missing etc. Back in the bullpen, Tara and Bobby are laughing. In the parking garage, Sue has spotted a surveillance camera pointed directly at her. [ Back in the bullpen ] Tara, Bobby, Demetrius and Jack watch the computer screen and Sue looks up at the surveillance camera to talk to them, realising what is going on. Sue: I don't know about you, Levi, but this… was well worth waiting for. [ Back in the parking garage ] Levi runs over to the car, jumping into it through the gap where a door should have been and sits in the drivers' seat, putting his paw on the steering wheel. [ Back in the bullpen ] The others are still watching the computer screen in amusement. Bobby: Yeah, yeah, you're styling, Levi. Good on ya, mate. That car is you. [ Back in the parking garage ] Levi barks. Sue looks up at the surveillance camera again to talk to the members of the team watching her. She puts up both thumbs. Sue: I love it! … I love it! [ Corridor in the FBI building ] Sue is just heading back to the bullpen, entering into the corridor via a door on the side. Lucy is walking down the corridor holding some files. Sue spots her. Sue: Lucy! Did you just see what they did? (Pointing her thumb back over her shoulder) Lucy looks a mixture of annoyed and disappointed. She stops walking to turn to face Sue, who also stops walking. Lucy: Nope. Sue: You ok? (A look of realisation crosses her face) The apartment! I forgot all about it! Sue raises her hand to her forehead. Lucy begins walking again, but being sure to make sure she turned to Sue when she talked. Lucy: That, I knew. You know, you scared me to death? Sue: I'm so sorry. Can we still get it? Lucy: Nope. Even if I had the nerve to call her back and ask her to meet us again, she wouldn't. It's gone. Sue: I just… I just caught up with this case. I'm sorry. Sue walks ahead slightly of Lucy, stopping and turning to face her now. Lucy stops walking. Lucy: Are you sure that's all it is? 'Cause call me crazy, but I've had this feeling all along that you weren't really sure about us rooming together. Now, if you don't wanna live with me, all you have to do is tell me. Sue: Luce… it's not about you. Lucy doesn't look convinced. Suddenly Jack comes into the corridor from the bullpen. Jack: Sue, we're wanted in Eldridge's office right away. Something's up. He walks off to head to Stan Eldridge's office. Lucy looks at Sue before quickly walking away herself. [ Stan Eldridge's office ] Stan Eldridge is waiting for Jack and Sue. He sees them appear in the doorway. Stan Eldridge: Oh, come in. Uh, sit. Stan Eldridge motions to the chairs on the other side of his desk. Jack and Sue notice Eldridge has company. Jack knows him, but Sue hasn't met him before. Martin Pavone: Jack. Jack: Hi Marty. Jack and Martin Pavone shake hands. Jack and Sue both sit down. Stan Eldridge: (Pointing to Martin Pavone) Sue, Martin Pavone, Assistant US Attorney. Sue: (Looking at Martin Pavone) Hi. Martin Pavone: I'm gonna get right to it, Miss Thomas. Henry Proctor's attorney says you made an illegal search of his client's garage. Could you please tell me where you were when you saw the explosive detonating device and the blasting caps? Sue: (Looking confused) I was in the garage… by… the work bench. Sue looks to Jack, looking for an answer to her confusion. Jack looks shocked. Stan Eldridge puts his hand to his face, looking very disappointed. Jack: (To Sue) What are you talking about… in the garage? Sue: (Sounding confused) The door was up. (She shrugs) And I saw… gas cans, and… the chemicals… And I went in to see what was in the box. Jack: You never told me you went inside the garage. Sue: (Still sounding confused) Nobody ever asked. The garage door was open. Jack and Martin Pavone both look worried. Martin Pavone: Would it have been possible to have seen the detonator and the blasting caps from outside the garage? Sue: No… Martin Pavone: Any evidence you got inside the garage is inadmissible… because you went in without a search warrant. Sue: (No longer confused) But what about the gas cans… and the ammonium nitrates… I saw them from outside? Martin Pavone: Well, the man has a car, and a lawn… there's nothing illegal about fuel and fertiliser. Sue looks at Jack, realising her mistake. Jack is looking frustrated. Martin Pavone: We got er, no chance here. The judge'll throw it out, and probably me along with it. You've got no choice but to release Henry Proctor. Jack: Sorry about this, Matty. Martin Pavone: Yeah. Me too. Martin Pavone leaves Eldridge's office. Sue looks around, looking like she feels guilty. [ FBI building ] Jack, Sue and Levi head down a corridor. Sue: I'm sorry. Jack: You already said that. Once is enough. And frankly, right now, it's a waste of time. It doesn't help us solve the problem. That's all I care about at the moment. Sue: We know he wants to bomb a refinery, take hundreds or thousands of lives, and we have to let him go free? Jack: Oh, he's already out. And if he does blow something up, we'd be the ones who'd get crucified for it. Sometimes the law's a wonderful thing, isn't it? Sue: So what do we do now? Jack: Our jobs… So that he doesn't blow something up. I'm not in the mood to get hung on a cross. [ Bullpen ] Jack is talking to the rest of the team. Jack: What happened, happened. It was my mistake. Sue's new, I'm her training agent… this case is my responsibility, not hers. Sue is sitting at her desk and looks upset. Jack: On the plus side, Sue's identified a threat. Now all we have to do is figure out how to stop him from carrying out his intentions. See if there's anything in his background we can at least hold him for… talk to friends, relatives, maybe somebody'll tell you that they're worried about what he might do. D, if you could go through Sue's report with her, see if there's anything she or we missed. Sometimes asking the right questions will get us to an answer. I'll work with Ted Daltry over Kaitlyn Oil, and beef up their security. We have no idea where Proctor is… he left with his attorney, and legally we couldn't follow him. He hasn't shown up at work or at home. (Throwing out his arms) We're wasting time sitting here. Everybody gets busy. Jack: Keep me informed of anything you find out, please. Myles gets up and stands in the middle of the bullpen, making sure that Sue cannot read his lips. He addresses the rest of the team. Myles: You know, we all knew something like this was inevitable. The sooner she realises that she is just not up to this job, the better for all of us… including her. Sue struggles to see his lips, but can guess that he is criticising her. She looks very upset. [ Bullpen - next morning ] Sue comes into the bullpen and makes her way to her desk with Levi. She sits down and then picks up her phone receiver. It doesn't pull up the whole unit this time. She checks to see if she can lift something else off her desk, and she can. Sue: (To Levi) At least I stopped the hazing. Demetrius suddenly comes over to her desk. Demetrius: Were you in the garage or out of it… when you saw Proctor's phone conversation? Sue: Both. Demetrius: Alright, let me be more specific. Where were you when he said the name Delaverson? Sue picks up her report and checks it. Sue: I was out of the garage, and Proctor was heading to his car in the driveway. Demetrius: (Smiling) Good answer. Sue: It's the truth. Demetrius: I know. That's why it's a good answer. Let's go. Demetrius takes Sue's report from her and they both head out of the bullpen. [ Supervisor, Stan Eldridge's office ] Demetrius comes in holding the report up. Jack is already in the office with Eldridge. Demetrius: (To Eldridge) We got something. A possible side-door way to get Proctor back in custody. Demetrius puts the report on the desk in front of Jack. He and Jack lean forward to see it. Sue is standing by the door, watching from behind them. Demetrius: This is from Sue's transcript. (He follows the words on the report with his finger) "I already told Delaverson, I got no problem with that. Yeah, he got me what I needed". Tara ran a check on known chemical distributors, and John Delaverson turns up on the list, at the Philadelphia office. They've had a watch on this guy for about a year. Supplying chemicals for illegal use… mostly to meth labs. But he also used to work in explosives… in Maryland. Jack: Get him in here now. Demetrius: (Heading for the door) It's already happening. Eldridge picks up his phone and starts dialling a number. Sue looks over to Jack for him to explain what just happened. Jack: If we can put heat on Delaverson, then he tells us he illegally sold ammonium nitrate and blasting caps to Proctor, we have a new, clean entry point. Sue smiles happily. [ Street - night ] Sue has just stepped onto the street from a shop. She is holding a dry cleaning bag with clothes in. She heads to her car which is parked up on the side of the road. Suddenly, a hand grabs her arm. She gasps and turns to find Henry Proctor standing there. Henry Proctor: The game is about to change. You're not going to win. All my life, inferior people have conspired to hold me down, but no more. I'm smarter than you. You're all going to find that you're hopelessly overmatched. He reaches forward and opens Sue's car door for her. Henry Proctor: I find this all very… invigorating, don't you? Henry Proctor smiles at Sue and then walks away. Sue stands for a moment to compose herself. [ Interrogation room - night ] Jack and Demetrius are interviewing John Delaverson. Delaverson: Henry Proctor? Jack: Would you like me to spell it for you, Mr Delaverson? Delaverson: I'm not saying I know him… or don't know him. (He pauses) What would it mean to you if I did… or didn't? Jack: I think the more important question is, "what would it mean to you?" Demetrius: You got two options here, John. One: you can tell us the truth, and have a chance to get yourself out of this mess you now find yourself in… or two: you can let Henry Proctor blow up his bomb, and you go down with him for murder. There is a pause as John Delaverson thinks about it. Delaverson: I sold him explosives. [ Bullpen - night ] Jack, Bobby and Sue enter. Jack: Check all the places Delaverson said that Proctor might be… and keep the 24 hour watch on Kaitlyn Oil. Sue: I don't think he'll try anything at his own refinery. It's too obvious, and he knows we're expecting him there. Bobby: Nah, look… it's a game for him… and it's risky, but er, I get the feeling he likes a challenge. Sue: No. He wants to win. It's not about competition. He needs a win, to prove to himself and us, he's superior. Jack: So where does he get it? Sue: He wants revenge on Kaitlyn Oil... he doesn't care where he gets it. They have another refinery about 70 miles from here - Waterville. (She picks up a map) He wants us to think his target is here, but I think he's going there. [ Kaitlyn Oil refinery, Waterville - night ] A van arrives on site. It is Henry Proctor. He stops at the security gate. Demetrius (acting as a guard), goes over to the van. Henry Proctor: Hey. Demetrius: How you doing tonight? Henry Proctor: (Handing over some papers to Demetrius) Pretty good. Demetrius: (Looking over the papers) Yeah. What we got here? Henry Proctor: This is a late shipment coming in. Jack, Sue and Tara are in the surveillance van watching everything on the screen. The rest of the team is setting up around Henry Proctor's van, ready to get him. Demetrius: (Handing back the papers) Ok good… there ya go. Jack checks the surveillance monitor. Jack: (Speaking over a wire) His hands are clear. Let's go! The team rush into action, pulling Henry Proctor from the van and pushing him against the side of the van. Bomb squad get into the back of the van. Myles: Bomb's here… And disarmed. Inside the surveillance van, Jack and Tara breathe a sigh of relief. Sue sits back and smiles at Jack. Bobby: Bring the car around, Chris. Bobby cuffs Henry Proctor. Sue opens the back door of the surveillance van and looks at Henry Proctor. Sue: I guess the smartest don't always win. Finishing cuffing Henry Proctor, Bobby pushes him towards the car. Bobby: (To Henry Proctor) Come on. Sue gets back into the surveillance van, closing the door behind her. She sits back down and smiles at Jack and Tara, who return the smile. Jack pats Sue on the shoulder. Jack: Good job. The door at the back of the surveillance van is opened and Jack, Sue and Tara look to see who it is. Ted Daltry is standing there. Ted Daltry: Nice work, Hudson. Timing really is everything, isn't it? This ought to add on another zero or two onto the bonus cheque I'm gonna demand when I negotiate for my contract extension. Jack: Well, call it a win-win, Daltry. Whatever keeps you out of the FBI works for me. Jack forces a smile and Sue smiles in amusement. Ted Daltry shakes his head in slight amusement, muttering something under his breath and then closes the door of the surveillance van, leaving Jack, Sue and Tara alone again. Jack: (To Sue) What'd he say? Sue opens her mouth to repeat it, but then stops, shaking her head and smiling. Sue: You don't wanna know. [ Bullpen - next morning ] Sue is sitting alone in the bullpen at her desk. Levi is slumped out on the floor next to her desk. Sue moves a couple of files from her desk and onto a file shelf on her desk. Lucy then enters the bullpen. Lucy: Now I know why you didn't wanna get a place with me, you're (she waves her hand)… planning on moving in here. Sue laughs softly. There is a slight pause. Sue: What are you doing here so early? Lucy: Uh… same as you, I guess. Just trying to catch up. (She breathes in audibly) If we did live together, could've car-pooled. (She laughs softly) Congratulations by the way. Sue: Thanks. Lucy: (After a slight pause) I wanted to talk to you, uh… I'm really sorry… about what happened with the apartment. Sue: Oh, what are you sorry about? I was the one who missed the appointment. Lucy: True, so you can be sorry too, but… I didn't have to act like we were in junior high. You've had a really big week, and I could've been a little understanding. Sue: It was wrong of me to get so caught up… in what I was doing that I forgot to call. (She stands up) It was also wrong of me not to tell the truth when you first mentioned the possibility of us moving in together… Lucy: (Looking slightly upset) So, I was right… You didn't wanna live with me. Sue: Uh, no… that's wrong. I did… but I was afraid. Lucy: (Looking slightly surprised) Afraid of what… that I'd be that bad? Sue: That you would think I was that bad. (She pauses for a moment) It's different living with me… (Lucy's face softens) little things you never think of… like, you always have to watch TV with closed-caption… some people don't like that. I, I, play music sometimes because I like to feel the vibrations… I play it very loud (Lucy smiles slightly)… I'm noisy, because I forget… I always have to be looking at you when you speak… it can be annoying sometimes… Lucy: Sue, I appreciate your concern, but these are all things that can be worked out and adjusted to… Sue: Yes… they can. Sue looks down for a moment, and then back up. Sue: I was just using them as an excuse… (Lucy looks worried again) because, I was afraid to lose you as a friend… I've heard stories of people becoming enemies by rooming together… sometimes, getting too close to someone can destroy what brought you together. Lucy: But you can't live your life like that, Thomas. Sue: I know, and I don't want to anymore. Sue and Lucy hug. Sue: One last thing… Lucy: What? Sue: How firm are you on that… no dogs on the couch rule? I told him I'd ask. Levi barks. Lucy laughs. Lucy: It's ok… he's not a dog. Lucy and Sue both laugh, looking towards Levi. [ Corridor just outside the bullpen ] Sue is just exiting the bullpen. Jack is outside the door in the corridor, reading. He sees her and taps her on the shoulder. Jack: Your presence is requested in the parking garage. Sue: And why might that be? Jack raises his eyebrows at her, and then walks off. Sue follows him. [ Parking garage ] Jack, Sue and Levi have just entered the parking garage. Jack: We thought it was time to give you your own, your real, FBI issue wheels. Jack leads her to a beautiful shiny, crimson coloured car. Bobby, Demetrius, Tara and Lucy are leaning against it, waiting for them. Bobby: Just came down from special operations. Oh, it's a bit of a hand-me-down, but it's a nice one. Bobby opens the driver's side door for Sue. Levi jumps straight in, but Sue stops just as she is about to get in and turns to face Jack. Sue: (To Jack) If it starts shooting sparks, will you save me? Jack bites his bottom lip, and looks down. The others all start laughing. Jack: (To Bobby) You had to tell her, didn't you? Sue: (To Jack) So, you mean it's true? You really did… dump a car in the Potomac? Jack: The car was shooting sparks all over me, I… Demetrius: Tell her how… you called it in at the wrong frequency and every law enforcement radio in the city heard you. Jack starts laughing and hides his face with his hand in embarrassment. Bobby comes over, and puts an arm around Jack. Bobby: Yes. I believe his exact words were (putting on a silly accent), "I'm on fire, there are sparks everywhere. I'm putting it in the Potomac". Tara and Lucy burst into laughter. Sue: (Putting on a serious face) I think that was… perfectly reasonable… (She smiles) Sparky! Bobby laughs, looking at Jack, as Sue gets into her new car. Sue: This should cut my commute time in half. Jacks nods, and Tara and Lucy look at each other in agreement. Sue starts the car. She looks at Jack and winks, and then speeds off out of the parking garage. Tara, Lucy, Jack, Demetrius and Bobby all watch her go. [ Bullpen - next day ] Lucy is sitting at her desk with a newspaper on the property section, pen in hand. She looks frustrated. Lucy: Maybe if we move to North Carolina, we could find something in our price range bigger than a matchbox. Bobby has stopped at the filing cabinets near Lucy's desk, overhearing her. Bobby: Hey… I got a friend who's looking for some roommates… got a really great place. Lucy: Who? Bobby: Carl Phillips. Lucy: Carl Phillips in counter-terrorism? Bobby: Yeah. Lucy: No thanks. She goes back to looking in the newspaper and Bobby closes the filing cabinet drawer. Sue comes running in, stopping at Lucy's desk. Sue: Luce… I may have found a place. Lucy looks at her like she doesn't believe her. Sue: Yeah. [ Apartment that Sue has found ] Sue, Lucy and Levi walk in. Charlie Adams is just behind them. Lucy stops just inside the door and looks around in amazement. Lucy: Oh! It's fabulous! Lucy breathes in audibly, laughing, as she goes into the kitchen area. Lucy: (Looking to Sue, then Charlie) Oh! We can't possibly afford this! Sue: The owner is a friend of Charlie's. Lucy starts looking in the kitchen cabinets. Charlie: Actually, a young fellow who grew up next door to me. Owns the whole building. He's moving to France, and he'll give you a reduced rent if you look after the building for him while he's gone… and I'd be happy to help. Sue: I told him we'd cook him meatloaf every now and then. Lucy goes from the kitchen area, still laughing in disbelief as she looks at the amount of space. Lucy: I can't believe this! Lucy suddenly notices the painting she had admired in the shop window hanging in the middle of the living room wall. Sue: I hope you don't mind, but I already told them we'd take the place. Lucy: (Motioning to the painting) You hate that painting. Sue: But you love it. And I figured the only way I was ever going to figure out why was to have… have it around to look at. Lucy: If it gets too much, we can put it in my room. Sue: (Fingerspelling and speaking) Deal. Lucy: (Fingerspelling and speaking) Deal. Ah… Lucy taps Sue's shoulder. Lucy: (Signing only) There's no place like home. Sue: (Signing and speaking) I agree. There's no place like home. Sue and Lucy hug, smiling.
